Definition of the Microsoft Windows Registry All (New content 6/7/02)
This article is brand new (as of June 3). It covers every version and subversion of Windows from Win 98 to Win XP, and is definitely the best place to start if you don’t know what the Windows Registry is and would like to find out. Combining short, useful explanations with additional links to other articles, it especially defines and describes the Registry and discusses the popular topic of Registry editing.
How to Manage Remote Access to the Registry Win XP (New content 6/7/02)
One of the excellent How To articles written for Windows XP, this one discusses how to access and edit the Registry on a remote computer. There are limitations in doing this, but the article explains what they are. When you are walking through a field of landmines, it’s always helpful to have a map of where they are located!
How to Back Up the Registry Win98, Win98 SE, Win ME (New content 6/5/02)
How often have I written it? And how often have you read it elsewhere? “Before making modifications in the Registry, back it up!” “Great (you might ask), how do I do that?”
On my Registry Patches page, I give simple recommendations on this in that bright red-edged box near the top. In Win95, I recommend the native tool ERU. In Win98, I still preferred to use ERU, though the native ScanReg tool is another contender. (It just doesn’t have the flexibility of ERU because, unless you modify its configuration files, it has a fixed limit of how many copies it will keep. ERU, on the other hand, doesn’t have this restriction, and simply asks you to name the file and place it wherever you want.) In Win ME, use ScanReg (ERU doesn’t work right, because Win ME has a new Registry structure). In Win XP there are several options such as System Restore or a manual exporting of the Registry, but I prefer the freeware utility ERUNT.
In the above captioned KB article, Microsoft recommends ScanReg for Win98 and Win ME. The article provides some additional information for those who are not entirely familiar with the tool and how it works. I have some further information on customizing ScanReg’s Registry backup behavior here.
